There are many different kinds of business organization, ranging from the sole trader running a small business to great multinational corporations. This module examines the aims, structures and processes of these organizations and the way they are managed. In particular it examines the role of finance in business, the function of accounting as a vital source of management information, the marketing of products and services and the management of human resources. It also looks at the legal aspects of business operation.
The first section of the module covers the nature of markets and the role of the price mechanism in resource allocation. We examine the motivation and behavior of consumers and producers that underlie how markets operate. We then look at the whole economy, analyzing such phenomena as inflation, unemployment and economic growth.
LZ013 Mathematics and Quantitative Methods for University Study
The module provides you with the skills you need to enter the business arena and the skills you need for a degree that requires mathematical and quantitative competence. The module is taught as a series of informal lectures and exercise classes where you can ask questions as they occur and gain experience of the various mathematical techniques you need. The teaching format helps you to develop an analytical approach to problem solving, matching the skills you learn to the problem type and working systematically towards a solution. The module covers basic algebraic manipulations, fundamentals of differential calculus, matrices with numerical examples, simple functions, simple ideas in probability, statistical measures for interpreting real-life data; and statistical inference.
Whether you decide to enter the workplace or continue studying in higher education you need to acquire certain transferable skills. This module covers independent learning skills, critical reading and writing skills, research and library skills, structuring essays, referencing and writing bibliographies, preparing for different forms of assessment, critical evaluation of books and journals, participation in seminars and discussions, giving presentations, and word processing and other computing skills such as using email and the internet in business environment.
